Dr Elaine Wong M.B.B.S.(Hons) MPH FRANZCO, is a consultant  ophthalmologist – eye doctor – expert in both adult and paediatric ophthalmology and with sub-specialty expertise in ocular-motility. She has been a consultant for over 10 years in both private practice (at Berwick, Box Hill and Springvale) and in the public health system (at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital – RVEEH – and the Royal Melbourne Hospital) where she  consults, operates and mentors trainee ophthalmologists in ocular-motility.

Doctor Wong graduated with honours from Melbourne University with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1998. She completed her Ophthalmology fellowship in Ocular-Motility at the RVEEH, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. During her ophthalmology training, Doctor Wong spent time researching the prevalence of glaucoma within the Aboriginal community and attended an eye camp in Nepal.

Doctor Wong has presented her research at various international conferences and is actively involved in eye care research within the community. She has worked as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Eye Research Australia, researching Low Vision and also consulted at a specialised weekly Low Vision clinic at the RVEEH – in which she played an integral role in developing. She is an acting committee member of Vision2020, an organisation committed to “raising ending avoidable blindness and vision loss in Australia by 2020 and enable greater community participation of people who are blind or vision impaired”.

In recent years, Doctor Wong has been on the Advisory Committee on Medical Devices (ACMD) – consulting as an eye specialist. The ACMD advises and provides independent medical and scientific advice to the Minister and the Therapeutic Goods Administration – the division of the Department of Health responsible for the regulation of therapeutic goods – on safety, quality and performance of medical devices supplied in Australia.

Doctor Wong is a member of the Visual Standard Committee providing advice to VicRoads and provides expertise in the field of ophthalmology.
